View Full Version : Lag on J's servers. :S

Hey guys.

I've been having trouble with lag on the vanilla and 1.7.3 servers. Mostly block and mob.

It might be my end, but Marius suggested it's the distance between where ever J hosts the servers and me. :S

Is there anything I could do to lower the lag or stop it completely? :S

The Vanilla and the beta-1.7.3 server are hosted in the Netherlands. The server has a 100mbit up/down symmetrical fibre connection. On this connection there is about 6 ms latency between the server and the Amsterdam Internet Exchange(AIX). The AIX is the biggest Internet Exchange in the world with excellent peering to all continents.... usually ;)

Dom had some lag issues before as well. It turned out the route packes from the server take to him go from Amsterdam -> London -> New York, which is excellent. But his return packets went from Miami -> Lissabon(Portugal) -> London -> Amsterdam which is less then ideal.

When I do a traceroute to your IP (blanked here) I get the following:

Your PC is the next hop clocking in at just under 400ms. The route from the server to you globally goes like this: Amsterdam -> London -> New York -> Los Angeles -> Sydney. So yeah, that's quite a bit of distance to cover.

Right now it looks as if there is some additional lag between Amsterdam and London. Usually the latency between those two is 50ms without any packet loss. Now there's 170ms and some packet loss. That might explain why your connection is less then ideal. That should resolve itself in time. However, you will never be a LPB (http://internetgames.about.com/od/glossary/g/lpb.htm) on the Vanilla or beta-1.7.3 server ;)

Could you do a traceroute to the server and post it here please?

That makes it a trip around the world then :)

Your route to the server takes you from Sydney -> India -> London. At the moment that route takes as much time as from the server to you. Normally packets from the server should be reaching you about 60ms faster. Times measured above are round trips. So sending packets will take you around 200ms, and receiving them will take around 170ms. Those aren't great latencies.

Think of it this way: you start mining a block this may take 2 seconds to complete. Everything you do won't be noticed by the server until 200ms later, the server then needs to process your data, and when it's done it needs to send you the result. It will take the you 200 ms transmit time + some processing time on the server 50ms + transmit time back to you 200ms + local rendering 50ms. So that adds about half a second to the total time to everything you do which requires feedback from the server.

At any given time there are a ton of updates being send and processed so that will make things feel laggy. I'm afraid there isn't very much we can do about those latencies. The speed of light is the limiting factor in global communications. Light is just too slow. The only thing we could do is limit the draw distance on the server. That wouldn't fix this problem completely, it would only make it a little less laggy.

The best thing you could do is move to Europe, preferably the Netherlands ;)
