View Full Version : Drama in launcher land

I haven't updated the FTB server to Direwolf20 1.18 version 1.3.1 yet because there's been some drama.

It seems the FTB people decided to no longer support 3rd party launchers such as MultiMC and instead require everybody to use the spyware Overwolf stuff:
https://www.reddit.com/r/feedthebeast/comments/v1qtra/seriously_overwolf_is_terrible_why_does_it_have/

Then the MultiMC dev decides he doesn't like open source anymore despite publishing MultiMC with the Apache license:
https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/rie2oe/multimc_is_dropping_all_support_for_aur_packages/

So for now I'm switching over my Minecraft instances to PolyMC which is a fork of MultiMC:
https://polymc.org/
It essentially works the same as MultiMC. From their website:

An Open Source Minecraft launcher with the ability to manage multiple instances, accounts and mods. Focused on user freedom and free redistributability.

That just leaves a a convenient way of loading FTB mod packs without getting infected with Overwolf spyware. If anyone has any ideas on this I'm all ears.

We can just stay open source until it inevitably hard locks us out. I am having fun on 1.2 and haven't seen a need to update as of yet.

If other people keep the same aversions that we do, then I bet that FTB will be forced to forgo their partnership (since we know its all about the money).

Not sure if this is a structural change or not, but I just downloaded FTB Presents Direwolf20 1.18 version 1.4.1 using PolyMC. This seems to currently be the latest version:

Is anyone else able to just download the pack now? If so, I'll consider updating the server.

Just downloaded in PolyMC as well. Looks to be working. Go for it.

Looks like more drama in launcher land.

The main dev of PolyMC kicked out all the other devs and made a rant about "radicalist leftist queer idiology".

I don't have a lot of tolerance for intolerant people. Which may sound like a contradiction, but it's not. You can't have a society that is tolerant of al kinds of different people if you tolerate these kind of intolerant people. Their end game will always be to exclude people that they deem different. Be it due to skin color, religion, faith, education, gender, whatever. They always seem to find something to hate about.

To repeat what I've said in the past. Everybody is welcome in our community as long as they respect the staff and other players. And respect in this case means: to treat as a human being, not to treat as an authority. There seems to be some confusion about that as well. So PolyMC gets the boot from me and now I'm looking for yet another Minecraft launcher. From what I can tell the devs that got kicked out of PolyMC started Prism Launcher (https://prismlauncher.org/). It looks just like MultiMC and PolyMC. Let's just hope there's no more drama with that one.

Oh, and if anyone knows about any other Minecraft launcher that's good. Please share.

*edit*
I installed PolyMC through my package manager (I run Linux). First time starting PolyMC it asked if I wanted to copy all the Minecraft instances from MultiMC. So that's nice. It even copied over all the groups I made making this migration a lot simpler to do than moving from MultiMC to PolyMC. Was not really looking forward to having to organize all of my instances after migrating, but it seems that wasn't even an issue. Kudos to Prism Launcher for making it easy to move.

It currently looks like we may need to switch launchers if we are going to be running/updating FTB packs. Prism was asked by the FTB guys to pull support for FTB packs in future updates, but agreed to allow heritage access. In response Prism looks to have pushed out an update (v7.0) that removes FTB support along with some already planned upgrades.

From what I can tell, if you are running Prism 6.3 with previously installed FTB packs you are good to go. I was able to get on the HD FTB server this morning. Not sure if this will change in the future.
