  • Server upgrade

Today our server hardware that runs our Minecraft servers has received an upgrade. The installed RAM has been upgraded from 16GB to 32GB Geil Enhance Corsa PC3-12800 cas9.

During the peak hours and with all servers running we had round 1GB of memory left. That's still enough to make sure everything runs lag free, but not enough if we want to expand. And we want to expand

There are two new Minecraft servers on the way, but more on that later....

    Some nerdy server specs:
    • Intel Core i7 3770K
    • 32GB RAM
    • Areca 1680i Raid controller with 4GB cache and battery back-up
    • 2x 1.5TB HD in Raid1
    • 9x 2TB HD in Raid6
    • Hopf 6039 PCI GPS receiver (for extemely accurate time)
    • Intel dual port ethernet server adapter

That should help keep things running smoothly for a while

That's a pic I found doing an image search. The memory modules look exactly like that though

I can't exactly say how many users we had online when I saw that available memory was low. The Minecraft servers are configured in such a way that when they start they claim a certain amount of memory, and when they need it they can claim additional memory. A lot of memory is also used by the Minecraft servers to cache things.

This means that a server will keep a lot of stuff in memory, even after players have left the server. Tekkit is a prime example of this. When the server starts it uses maybe 500MB, but after a while it'll use 8GB no sweat with only one or two players on. It's a real memory hoarder
