  • HappyDiggers goes HTTPS

With all the server stuff going on the past weeks I thought it time to move on to HTTPS. This means that our website and forum are now only accessible via a secured connection in your browser. The main motivation for HTTPS is authentication of the visited website and protection of the privacy and integrity of the exchanged data.

In the past we relied on JavaScript to obfuscate user names and passwords as they were transmitted over the Internet. As far as I know this has worked well enough for us. But now everything, not just log in credentials, will be transmitted over an encrypted connection. This will help keep everybody's log in credentials safe and make it harder for unsavoury parties to listen in on who does what exactly and steal your credentials.

To secure the connection we're using free certificates provided by the Lets Encrypt project. These certificates are now trusted by all mayor browsers such as: Firefox, Opera, IE, Edge and Chrome. I've (hopefully) configured the server to renew these certificates once a week. We'll see how things go

I plan on also securing the Dynmap webpages since those also contain user log in forms and chat. Dynmap for our TFC servers is still a while away so please be patient.
