Holy moly, you still play TFC? :D I remember that sometimes weird terrain generation could expose those layers aswell, kinda like geologists go back in time to uncover land formation history.
It's interesting to see how TFC generates ore veins :)
The world goes on for 208 blocks / 13 chunks beyond the world border. So those ore veins aren't something players can actually mine.
There is not much to do in the TFC if you have reached the colored steels, many people continue building and expanding yours towns, but recently I have logged in sometimes to setup a new settlement, trying to meet some goals.
I really like the isometric rendering of the dynmap, it even gives me the will to build something cool to appear on the map.
