    Downtime, not our fault!

Even the biggest Internet Exchange in the world can go down. Which is what happened this afternoon. During routine maintenance an engineer created a loop in a VLAN in the AM3-datacenter of Equinix. As a result of this many systems overloaded which caused the border gateway protocol sessions to expire. This protocol is used to connect large networks together which is mainly what an Internet Exchange does.

The end result was that a lot of sites, including HappyDiggers, went down for a short time. Here's a graph showing the resulting decrease in traffic flowing through the Amsterdam Internet Exchange:

Downtime is never fun. But at least this tme I didn't have to do anything to get things up and running again
