    Making snapshot server more appealing

it would be nice if you could keep your inventory between updates

While not impossible, it would also cause some potential problems.

A player's inventory is stored in a player.dat file inside the world's save folder. The player coordinates and direction are also stored here. This is where the potential problems come in. If we were to save the player.dat files on snapshot updates, then we'd have no idea where players would end up. You could spawn inside of a mountain where you were in a plains before or inside of rock deep underground where a cave used to be in the new 1.17 snapshots. Or, if you're in the Nether, inside of a lava lake. What fun times could be had when you spawn inside of The End and the island you were on before no longer exists?

Also we have no way of knowing what things Mojang fixes or updates between snapshots. There have been cases where player.dat files changed causing crashes.

All that stuff means we'd have to jump in and fix things. Right now the snapshot server is pretty much autonomous. We get a notice whenever it updates and it just keeps on going. We like that. And don't forget that part of the charm of the snapshot server is that you start fresh with each snapshot. It's not meant as a server where you start long lasting projects. You are warned that everything gets reset with each new snapshot in chat so you know what you're getting yourself into.

I don't think saving player's inventories between updates is worth the hassle. If another staff member is willing to take care of the issues mentioned above then sure, I'd be willing to try making the changes. But unless that happens things will stay the way they are.
